How are Medjoul dates sorted?
Medjoul dates are graded on two optical factors: size and peel separation.
- Size: This is measured in grams per fruit.
- Peel separation: This is the percentage to which the peel has separated from the flesh.
Although size and peel separation are visual differences, the internal properties of the dates, such as freshness, flavor and texture, always remain the same.
Size
- S: 13-15 grams each
- M: 15-18 grams each
- L: 18-23 grams each
- XL: 18-27 grams each
- J: 23-27 grams each
- Super Jumbo: 27+ grams each
Loose shell
Loose skin is expressed as a percentage of the skin that detaches from the flesh:
- Very low: less than 10%
- Low: less than 20%
- On average: less than 30%
- High: more than 30%
Loose skin can occur during the growth of the fruit on the tree, or due to improper storage. It is not an indicator of freshness or dryness and does not affect the internal quality of the date. Moist or soft dates often have a higher degree of loose skin. The less loose skin, the tighter and more attractive the date looks.
